-- Whether Little or Big -- By John Herlihy Are you large As a river barge? Are you small As nothing at all? Whether large or small, Whether little or tall, Whether almond or fig, Everything is big. Are you here In the realm of somewhere? Are you there In the realm of nowhere? Are you somebody Wishing to be there? Are you nobody Wishing to be here? The atom never seen, Witnessed as light. The wind roams unseen, In the depths of night. Be it large or small, Each makes its mark. Apple blossoms fall, In the almond tree a lark. Being lost nowhere, Being found everywhere. Secret whispers heard, Deep meaning in a word. Being forgotten some, Being remembered none. Sometimes missed, Sometimes blessed. Walk into the hour, Hold your head high. I am reminded of a story told by Stephen Hawking about the lady who believed the Earth was supported on the back of a turtle. When asked who or what is supporting the turtle, she said matter-of-factly, "it's turtles--all the way down!" Unlike you, she was a great conversation killer.

Your poem sends me pondering the war in Israel and the big and small of it in all areas. The world is full of humankind who think they're big, but are proving small. All such persons seem to not accept their destiny as who they are, not who they wish to be.
