-- The Question Why --
by John Herlihy
So many crucial questions to lie in wait for us to ask,
Many crucial questions to answer, such a difficult task.
The one absolute question found in the question why,
The one absolute reason that we gaze up into the sky.
When we gaze up at the sky, what is it that we see?
All the promising mystery that I can find within me.
When we look within ourselves, what do we feel?
All of the sweet mystery we are waiting to reveal.
We ourselves as spring flowers waiting to fully bloom;
We are planted in an earthly garden, nothing to assume.
The infant soul as enclosed petals waiting to fully open;
One by one open they do, the mystery of life to betoken.
As fallen angels in an earthly realm, lost the heavenly abode,
Shedding vestiges of innocence in its journey down the road.
A journey of return to the paradise the infant soul has lost;
The book of knowledge read to the end with its human cost.
The one ultimate reckoning that informs the question why,
Exotic perfumes of love that fills us with the sweetest reply.
To know the true reality, in return to come to be known;
Born here as a mirror reflection, of shadows and light sewn.
Born as human beings, anointed by breath of spirit from above,
To love ourselves and others and in return to come to be loved.
What could be more mysterious than this miraculous exchange,
An emotion to breach the earthly horizon with its infinite range.
When we arrive at our destination in this journey of return,
The earthly heart with the divine heart, its eternal flame to burn.
For now, we journey onward with love as our earthly flame,
Love of the Divine Spirit we invoke through the Divine Name.
