-- The Gaps of Time --

by John Herlihy

Behold the gaps of time into which we fall,

A prelude, an interlude, to hold us in thrall.

The pattern of our day suddenly suspended,

The rhythm of night time suddenly upended.

The dying day as bleeding sunset to behold,

The moment a flower bud begins to unfold.

Falling into the darkening depths of despair,

Seeking the illuminated heights during prayer.

Realizing the extent of what we don’t know,

Touched by the chill serenity of falling snow.

Time put on hold as we sit around and wait,

Wait patiently as we stand before the gate.

An arrival that occurs as a promise kept,

The finality of a departure when we wept.

First descent, then recovery, however brief,

Bewildered by the miraculous, then relief.

WHAT A FINE WORK, JOHN! AND I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE LAST LINE THAT BROUGHT EVERYTHING TOGETHER; FOR JUST TO REALIZE THAT EVERY GAPS OF TIME IN OUR LIVES ARE PRECISIONLY SET IN PLACE WITH NOTHING 'TOO EARLY' OR 'TOO LATE' BUT 'EXACTLY' AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. WHAT A RELIEF, INDEED! THANK YOU, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Seems like those gaps of prier time are past movie clips of who we used to be but never forgotten...Yes as I get older every second is far greater in meaning, purpose, preciousness and in gratitude..

An adroit paradox you've wordsmithed, at least to me. That there are so many instances of: "the finality of a departure when we wept." Time and departures are companions for me. I've held that departures, as you've poeticized, are necessary for departure begets beginning another span of time. Yes, even in death, for existence is eternal finding new forms in which to be its playful way to perpetually extend time.

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
