-- Talking to God --
by John Herlihy
Who is going to teach me how to talk to God?
Who can reach me when along the road I plod?
In infancy, we talk to God with free-born intimacies,
Our innocence holds no barriers with divine mysteries.
The secret friend always there with me by my side,
The beloved father with whom the world may abide.
Little children give freely from the wealth of their love,
They know not of rejection, only the freedom of a dove.
At bedtime, we kneel down to utter the sweetest prayer,
As shooting stars beyond the window a miracle to share.
To see things in the dark, or to talk to an invisible friend,
To utter sweet nothings of the day from beginning to end.
As we age, we lose such innocence like the skin of a snake,
And like the snake, ever in search of the one true mate.
Instead, to talk with God all lies and duplicity to hide,
In the trust and intimacy of the one true friend to abide.

This prayer is very old and comes from a time when every night that a child went to bed, death lurked outside in many forms and many children never lived to grow up.
