-- New Again --

by John Herlihy

Old emotions now cold,

Sad days lost back when.

Yet many things gone old,

Now back as new again.

Happiness can go stale,

Brief moments that age.

The wonder of life’s tale,

Finishing as an aging sage.

Never to happen again,

Miracles lived as a child.

Buried way back when,

All as a first thing wild.

Does a flower grow old?

Spring itself forever lives.

Old stories newly told,

As innocence that gives.

Nothing is like falling rain,

As fresh as the new dawn.

Divine mercy made plain,

As a tree in spring reborn.

Breath of life as air fresh,

Seeing for the first time.

Old/new as intimate mesh,

That tells a story sublime.

Many decisions as tortuous,

No one wants to be wrong.

Some choices serendipitous,

Indeed, here I am, still belong.

Old body, the mind still new,

Seeing as if for the first time.

Fresh wind never before blew,

Always fresh until the last time.

When I do take my final leave,

May I remember myself as young

No need on my grave to grieve,

Only echoes of a life well-sung.

ISN'T IT MARVELOUS HOW OUR LIVING FROM DAY 1 TO THE END...NIGHT TURNS TO DAY, WINTER TURNS TO SUMMER, FLOWERS DIE TO BE REBORN, OLD TESTAMENT AND NEW TESTAMENT, ETC....TAKES THE FEAR AWAY AND PREPARES US FOR BEING 'NEW AGAIN', FOREVER. FINE WORK, MY FRIEND AND THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

"echoes of a life well-sung" is a mantra that we see ignored daily from those who refuse the allowance of growing older as rich a process as when one was very young. Yet, complaining is the mantra echoed far too often. You've made it clear in this treasure trove of important thoughts that the further one can look back and fondly embrace it all, is the one who takes that last breath with a smile. Well done.

“Only echoes of a life well-sung.” A treasurefull of worth in this last line, John. Well-sung….I really like that. ~~ djl

Lots of imagery leaving nostalgia behind in favor of what is new and glorious happening right now that we should get involved in rather than let everything become boring. Nicely done!

I've found that the primary purpose of aging is to reach my infancy again… Much sooner than I expected. Dammit!
