-- Blink of an Eye --
by John Herlihy
The command of the Lord,
But the blink of an eye.
Struck by a flaming sword,
Left behind a final cry.
Why am I blind,
With time to spare.
Moments a gift most kind,
Each one a kind of prayer.
We attentively listen,
But what do we hear.
Night stars silently glisten,
Saying the hour is near.
We think of life unending,
With all the time in the world.
Our attitudes rigid, unbending,
Until in an abyss we are hurled.
It is not the needle that sees,
A passageway in the needle’s eye.
Nowhere to pass thru with ease,
On its sublime vision I rely.
To live as son of the way,
A journey often harrowing, bleak.
A destination such hope to convey,
Pure faith in knowing what I seek.
The soul as fertile ground,
Planting seeds into the unknown.
A life lived as profound,
To flourish as a flower grown.

I thought of two songs: The Battle Hymn of the Republic, "He has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword." and Amazing Grace, "I was blind, but now I see."
