-- The Fabric of a Life --

by John Herlihy

Shall I tell you what it is like to live this rarefied life

To find oneself on this blessed earth as a human being

We fall from eternity to a time of sweet innocence

With all the quirks, the foibles, the weaknesses implicit

With sweet innocence lost, we have so much to learn

Every day the things we carry get so much heavier

It depends on what’s inside the baggage you carry

What you live now continues to live in the past

To balance what we need with our urges to desire

Gathered to create the person moving into the future

With so much to learn, with so much we need to know

So many mistakes with so much forgiveness to ask for

Bound together and engraved upon the plate of the soul

The free, boundless, wild, inquisitive soul we are given

Sewn with the threads of free will into the fabric of a life

Few poets could do such a lovely job of defining life.

A beautiful confession of the way life really is for most. We all make mistakes and we all get into things we shouldn't have. But it's how we deal with that baggage we carry that makes us happy or sad. I prefer happy and I believe you do, too, in many of your poem's expression.

I like to think of my baggage and fuel for wonderful memories. Like the loss of cameras with priceless pictures could never be made again still in them. Best not to regret what happened and let it work on you but shirk it off and move on to the next memory being built.

Yes, the freedom to control or lose control of that which is the inner spirit needs much nurturing. As you bring out, the baggage is only as heavy as we've made it, with many of us not truly paying enough attention to the resolve much of our carry-forward experience of the past needs. There continue to be fewer and fewer "valuable" possessions available to us. But, the inner life of one's spirit is his or hers alone. Most likely, there's no outside element that can compete.
