-- The Five Senses at Play --
by John Herlihy
Oh, how the five senses forever at play,
A wink and a nod in what they have to say.
The hurricane of sound heard in thunder,
As a gale of wind screaming in wonder.
The blinding light of an emerging rainbow,
Striking the heart as a target of its arrow.
Whispered prayer without any clear words,
As in the silence of dawn broken by songbirds.
The perfumed breath of the gardenia and rose,
Such rarefied heavenly scents assailing the nose.
The arrival of day’s light that smells so sweet,
The fiery twilight the darkness of night to greet.
The touch of a finger tracing a tender caress,
Tasting the life of this world ready to bless.
Oh, how five senses lend their sensual delight,
As passing days move between day and night.
