-- The Lesson of Perfection --
by John Herlihy
The lesson of perfection,
That it cannot be learned.
An immutable conception,
For this ideal we yearned.
Beyond the horizon, a feeling blessed,
Imperfection lies under heaven’s dome.
The place where earth and sky kissed,
This good earth our ancestral home.
We are surrounded by perfection,
A butterfly wing, a crystal of snow.
A spider web, from silken lace spun,
Perfect miracles blessings to bestow.
Perfection there in the wings,
Beyond the horizon, to taunt.
See a rainbow, the heart sings,
Seeking perfection what we want.
We are but imperfect beings,
Struggling here on earth, in exile.
Seeking a peace that perfection brings,
May the long day offer a simple smile.
We can’t live without mystery, its promise,
There beyond the horizon our eternal goal.
In the passing of the hours, we find solace,
In polishing rust from the perfection of soul.
