-- The First Light of Day --

by John Herlihy

The first light of day

The night a thief fleeting

The first light of dawn

A new day seeking

The thief of darkness fled

The heart of the night bled

The light of the sun gifted

As the heart of day uplifted

During the course of the day long

Life’s music plays its daytime song

Music played with nimble fingers

The melody fades, the echo lingers

All the questions the day asks

We find answers in ritual tasks

In the palace of day -- discovery

In the palace of night – recovery

At twilight the day at rest

The sun settles into her nest

The day now ready to doze

In its cycle of quiet repose

At the pivotal midnight hour

The day gathers its power

To awaken once again

At the appointed hour when

The first light of day reborn

From the infinity of night torn

I can just picture you forming these lines from what you see in person, as much of your writing clearly connects you personally to nature herself. Even you calling the sun ‘her’ — I like that. My favorite lines are the last four in stanza #2, and those two at the finish, in particular, “..infinity of night torn.” Night does feel infinite. . . until it’s not. And your poem captures that, too. ~~ djl

Isn't nature amazing, and the constellation even more so, never mind the sun and moon, wow ! You got this ! see you soon :)

A highly styled fancyful version of what happens during the daily cycles of the sun. I think a greater challenge would be to try to get the science right so many myths would go away.
