-- The Sunny Slopes of Long Ago --

by John Herlihy

Cheers to the sunny slopes of long ago

Days now gone by that I no longer know

Winged hooves of the colt forever young

Birds awakening dawn with an ancient song

As spring always arrives, so must winter die

Smiles herald arrival, at leave-taking we cry

Sweet songs enduring for thousands of years

Entering our ears inducing smiles and tears

The years flow as a river by God’s command

I doubt that anyone of us can truly understand

Perhaps it is better to be quiet and keep still

Words bow to the chirping of a whippoorwill

When I saw her for the first time, so beautiful

All thought melted away, but my heart was full

The worst mistake I made was let her slip away

We don’t know until too late how much to pay

Hail and farewell to the sunny slopes of long ago

Days now gone by that I never did truly know

MY JOY IN MY SLOPES OF YESTERDAY...ARE THAT THEY HAVE LED ME TO THE SLOPES OF TODAY. AND THAT IS ALL THAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THOSE, SO NECESSARY, 'SLOPES' OF LONG AGO. ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

Filled with nostalgia and a vision of what it was like back then. It probably bears little that or no comparison because that time was distorted by rose colored glasses and never really happened the way that it seemed.

Meaningful choices of visual words. Yes, we all have sunny slopes of long ago, but... like yourself, one can find more just around the corner of corners. This is indeed a time of the year when reflection can sometimes surprise us.
