-- Finding Poetry --
by John Herlihy
We know that poetry is found in a poet’s soul,
The poet writes noble verses on an ancient scroll.
What does he see that the rest of us don’t see,
Nothing, yet he opens doors with a skeleton key.
Poetry can be found in the ironing of a shirt,
There in the ruffled folds of a pleated skirt.
The wavelets of a pond bathed in moonglow,
A winter night witnessing the descent of snow.
We need not try too hard in order to see far,
How easily we bring near to us that distant star.
To see things clearly thru the lens of God’s eye,
Lifting the veil of reality, divine wonders draw nigh.
Visions gathered up in a collection of words,
Ancient tales captured in the tweeting of birds.
Life’s rhythms heightened by melodic rhymes,
The poem’s harmonies evocative of wind chimes.
Clouds not as puff pillows but as harbingers of storm,
Stars in the night sky into a magical kingdom transform.
Morning dew slackening the thirst of blades of grass,
Windews of a church made poetic thru stained glass.
Truth and beauty are found in the face of the ordinary,
In the face of the ordinary lies evident the extraordinary.
