-- Today Is the Day --

by John Herlihy

When I go to bed at evening’s end, I think:

Today wasn’t the day.

I settle in to rest as my hopes slowly sink,

My head on the pillow, I humbly lay.

Sometimes at evening’s end, I think:

Today was a terrible day.

The worst happened and my heart did sink.

Tomorrow will be another day.

When I wake up in the morning, I think:

Today is the day.

Ready for anything, my visions on the brink,

A tree grows in the heart of the day.

All the morning long, I think:

Today is the day, today is the day.

A never-ending day breaking open a link,

Liberating the day into the day.

Moving thru the day, I don’t much think:

The day is as it should be, another day.

Busy with activity, with a nod and a wink,

I go about my business, the kids at play.

The morning gives way to the afternoon,

The day’s shadows lengthen into dusk.

Wind sweeps the earth with its broom,

Leaves drip wet, tree bark smells of musk.

As night shadows make way, I think,

The day is almost done.

At twilight, the eyes of the earth blink,

I feel I have something won.

And so the rhythms of our lives play on,

We awaken, fill out days, lay down to rest.

Sad sweet melodies have moved the day along,

Tomorrow, like every day, blessed.

I GO THROUGH EACH DAY WITH GOD, THUS EVERY DAY IS A BLESSING WITHIN ITSELF! IT COMES WITH ITS OWN UNIQUENESS- NEW THOUGHTS, IDEAS, FEELINGS, ETC....ALL STREAMING TO ME FROM HIM. THERE ARE NO WASTED DAYS FOR ME FOR THEY ARE ALL PREDESTINED AND MANDATED BY GOD. MY DAY IS IN GOOD HANDS...EVERY DAY. LOVED THIS, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I've been struggling with a visual migraine making it very hard to read your poem. But I gather that it must be some anticipation of great regard… like what Trump will say today about tariffs. Probably not.

It seemed to be some invitation for Armageddon to come and save you from some unknown concern.

But I'm probably wrong.

Wow, John! There is so much rich soil in this one* — Your imagery is robust, as in: “A tree grows in the heart of the day.” .. what a unique concept that is. The repeat in the line “Today is the day, today is the day.” portrays to me an actual ‘optimism chant,’ and it only took one repeat in the same line to do this, even though there are 12 appearances of the word ‘day.’. This is wholly effective for me to envelope the significance of ‘a day,’ as well as provide worth and weight to the concept of ‘this one day’ and the idea of ‘now.’. I love the wind sweeping the earth with its broom, and how effectively you created the smell of musky wet tree bark. Skillful delivery, ‘Today is the Day.’ ~~ djl

As we both often write about the partnership of sorrow and joy, you've suggested a very positive vision of finding joy in most everything, even as sadness may journey in as well. Such is the paradox of the light of day needing the dark of night. We too make the most of the light and allow the dark to recharge. Enjoyed reading this, John.
