Alone

John Herlihy

Sometimes we need to be alone,

Alone, I say, pared down to bone.

Sometimes we need to withdraw,

To allow sharp icicles to finally thaw.

Questions calling for answers swirl,

Turn inward, find the oyster’s pearl.

To savor the silence without chatter,

To find whatever truly is the matter.

Silence finds a way to cut like a knife,

Thru all the noise of a complex life.

One touch from God to soothe pain,

Under His protection, I will remain.

When alone, we hear an inner voice,

To question deeply, to have choice.

Knowing deep mysteries concealed,

To listen to a secret being revealed.

My inner voice speaks softly as I listen,

The words as stars in my heart glisten.

Sweet echoes of what I need to know,

The weave of shadows and light to sew.

To hear an answer to one question,

To find forgiveness with confession.

Whenever in doubt, retreat within,

Amid silence hear the drop of a pin.

Deep within, a sense of emptiness,

Seen in the mirror, a sense of fulness.

There, in the interior, totally alone,

At one with ourselves, finally home.

I LIKED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SHARING, FROM BEGINNING TO END AND...I DO AGREE. MANY ANSWERS TO OUR PROBLEMS COME FROM WITHIN. BUT IN ORDER TO HEAR THOSE ANSWERS...ONE MUST SEEK SOLITUDE AND AND THE QUIET OF THE WISDOM THAT ONLY COMES FROM ABOVE. DO YOU RECALL THAT LOVELY, OLD HYMN, 'IN THE GARDEN'? THERE IS A BLESSING IN '...GOING TO THE GARDEN, ALONE...'. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I do agree everyone should take time to be alone, a chance to listen to our inner voice and figure out our life without any interference from other, just the silence that not everyone takes the time for.

I’ve missed reading your writing, John. Seems I’ve spent ample weeks practicing this very concept of which you write. “Whenever in doubt, retreat within,” — and in my case the doubt was ‘without’ and the fear found out there. Your topics are food for the soul; and this was a savory bowl! Thank you ~~ djl

We are naturally social creatures. It is through social groups, primarily the family, that we have survived and thrived for so long.

But you are right. It seems that when an individual gets away from the routine of family life, the thought process can run in overdrive and create entirely new ways of thinking. Being alone has that power and everyone should experience it at some time in their lives.

So exactly true. It is a sad person who can't be a companion to themselves.

Unfortunately, few today aspire to find that solace and peace that being alone without distractions creates for us. As you've poeticized, there is much to be gleaned... much of time, more than any socializing can match. Thank you for providing readers with multiple stanzas from which to find the spark that will guide them into the rewards of solitude.
