Destitute
John Herlihy
It’s hard to be alone and destitute,
To suffer a feeling of hunger acute.
Gather falling crumbs from a table,
Sleep on a bed of straw in a stable.
Awaken not knowing where to turn,
Ember ashes in the heart still burn.
Destitution felt within as an absence,
An emptiness in search of a presence.
There in the midst of hopelessness,
Arises a spark of true peacefulness.
The Lord there as your only hope,
To lift oneself up by the divine rope.
To the poor, give away your shoes,
Destitute with nothing left to lose.
Take note of the misery of another,
Treat a poor destitute as a brother.
In the end, we are never truly alone,
Even if we only feel as a rolling stone.

To be contrary, many of those on the street have mental illnesses that need to be treated if they are to ever rejoin society. Many, if given an opportunity to leave the street, will refuse.
And there have been cases, although rare, of people begging every day in places where there are tourists or high traffic, of people making a good income by begging every day instead of going to work on a job or business.
