The Idea of Character

by John Herlihy

Oh, how I miss the idea of character,

Perhaps I should say “fact” and all it implies.

Where has it gone and why has it departed?

The calm presence that it once evoked,

The brave nobility of its wise posture.

In the long ago, in another era of time,

When character was considered everything.

An altar before which all decency bowed,

From a sweet spring did character flow,

Into a flowing river whose inner light shimmers.

Character has now disappeared over a waterfall,

Riding the mist into tumultuous depths.

Down into the deep chasm of the modern era.

Whoever deigns to speak of character anymore,

With money, success and hyperbole all around.

Is anyone left who cares about character?

Who cares about the innate decency of a person?

Answer: Anyone who cares about the nobility of soul

Where the essence of human character finds its roots.

NOT MANY OF THOSE LEFT, JOHN, THE VERY 'IDEA' OF IT IS VANISHING QUICKLY. TIMES HAVING CHANGED SO GREATLY...WHEREBY MOST PEOPLE NOW ARE ACTUALLY 'REWARDED AND ENCOURAGED' FOR HOW CRUEL, UNSCRUPULOUS AND HURTFUL THEY CAN BE...RATHER THAN HOW UPSTANDING, HONEST AND LOVING. PEOPLE WITH 'CHARACTER' ARE LOOKED UPON AS...WEAK, AND THIS DISCOURAGES THE YOUNG FROM WANTING TO BE LIKE THEM. IT'S REALLY A SHAME. THUS, ALL THOSE THAT KNOW GOD CAN SAY IS...'WHAT A RELIEF IT IS THAT, IN 'HIS WORD', GOD LET US KNOW 'THESE DAYS' WERE COMING'. SO, 'HE IS' STILL VERY MUCH IN CHARGE AND WILL TAKE HIS FAITHFUL ONES THROUGH... AMEN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

An eloquent shout-out for any who will read and listen. All around, the invisible character wanders, seemingly fearful to come out of the shadows and build upon the gift we all have been given. Wonderful moments of contemplation. Thank you for posting. I think we once again might have been in synergistic mode as I just posted "Remembering a Life." which deals with the subject as well.

PS - looks like a stray letter creeped into you heading title. Take a look.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
