Happiness

by John Herlihy

On what does happiness depend,

What on earth does the universe lend.

Superficial happiness shining on the outside,

Or a deep-seated happiness on the inside.

Happiness always seems to escape our grasp,

Comes into our lives but doesn't last.

Is a butterfly happy fluttering its wings,

Does a firefly feel sorrow as its sad heart sings.

Happiness but momentary, always on the go,

Impossible into the fabric of life to sew.

A stitch here and there what we can expect,

All the misty happinesses we wish to collect.

Woven into the fabric of a grand whole,

A universal happiness as peace in the soul.

Not fleeting but permanent, to rest content,

Happiness that tells us what everything meant.

HAPPINESS IS AN 'EMOTIONAL' TOOL THAT WE LEARN ON EARTH. IT IS ALWAYS CHANGING...MOVING...WITH TIME AND 'OCCURRENCES' AS IT TURNS ON AND OFF. FEELINGS OF HAPPINESS ARE NOT PERMANENT AS IT CAN BE ALTERED BY SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER. HOWEVER...JOY IS A 'SPIRITUAL' TOOL, WHICH IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. JOY REMAINS THROUGH ALL OF LIFE'S STORMS. THUS, WHEN THE WORLD'S HAPPINESS HAS LEFT AND BIDS US ADIEU...GOD'S JOY IS STILL AROUND. JOY IS WHERE THAT UNEXPECTED...'UMPH'...TO PRESS ON, COMES FROM. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Happiness is usually portrayed in simplistic terms, often clich, et al. Here, you've explored the subject as a state of mine and heart that arrives in layered forms of experience. Yes, that inner happiness is prized by many of us who have been through the boot camp and tours in the ongoing struggle for happiness. You nailed it, however. Thank you for posting. I hope many read and share their head nods in agreement.
