Thresholds
by John Herlihy
So many thresholds I will never pass again,
Thresholds I had to pass in life way back when.
We arrive at a moment in time, a certain place,
A threshold we must pass that we had to face.
And face we always did into a certain unknown,
New seed to be planted that soon will be grown.
Opportunities arise beyond some next threshold,
Opportunities that when taken feel ever so bold.
Misfortunes may arise that we could never foretell,
Misfortunes that when passed cast a negative spell.
Thresholds at doorways some closed, others opened,
Decisions to be made that the thresholds betoken.
Thresholds I have passed now abandoned with dust,
Doors never again to pass now on hinges of rust.
So goes the way of the world with no exception,
We pass thru thresholds under God's protection.
All those former thresholds are but ancient history,
We await new thresholds with their air of mystery.
To enter a brave new world as light as a feather,
Finally freed of this old world and its binding tether.
