Doubt

by John Herlihy

doubt, that ghostly shadow

that roams stealthy thru the night

that walks brazenly thru the day

an uninvited guest in the mind

in search of a comfortable niche

roots of doubt ancient and deep

as if claiming a basic law of nature

wherever the light of certainty goes out

the specter of doubt will soon follow

as branches to the tree

as rivers to the sea

that feels at home between the layers

that slides down between the cracks

as if the mind and body

have parted their merry ways

the mind taking the body

where it doesn't want to go

walks proudly, no bending of knees

specializes in creating discontent

casting doubt what things meant

life is full of mysteries

doubt is not one of them

doubt exudes the odor of certainty

with its birthmark of duplicity

THE ONLY PERSON I HAVE NO DOUBT IN IS...GOD. OF MYSELF...THERE IS GREAT DOUBT. WHY? BECAUSE I AM HUMAN, FILLED WITH HUMAN FRAILITIES AND COME SHORT SO OFTEN. BUT GOD...HE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. HE KEEPS ME STRONG IN SPITE OF MY WEAKNESSES AND I GO ON VICTORIOUSLY EACH DAY...BECAUSE OF 'HIS STRENGTH'...NOT MINE. THANKS FOR POSTING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

The art of questioning, as your poem points out, is conscious of the element of doubt, but chooses to avoid the negative approach and seeks to empower the positive by not doubting, but challenging, asking... is that all there is, knowing that most everything we embrace in our daily lives has extension and or an echo that allows more considerations to be thought about. Loved this subject as I am asked often why I've no complaints. Fair to say, because I have few, if any doubts.

No truer words were ever said or written. I am a perpetual waffler simply because I am always doubting myself. Nothing sets me up faster to fail than doubting myself.

Imagine the squirrel trying to cross the road in traffic. That's me!
