Noticing Nature
by John Herlihy
Dawn birds are singing,
But I never listen,
I never take notice,
As bright stars glisten.
Now time to take notice,
All the beauty missed.
In wetlands floats a lotus,
A single gaze feels blessed.
The flower buds unfold,
With nothing at all to hide,
Nature's mystery freely told,
As a distant loon cried.
Gentle winds whisper,
Amid trembling leaves.
The day done sweet drifter,
Take your rest with ease.
Spring waters gush forth,
The virgin rivers freely flow.
From deep within the earth,
Their own destiny to sow.
The sun rises in the east,
Over the horizon to climb.
Day's light as movable feast,
Today moves forth as mine.
The sun sets in the west,
Beyond the horizon to expire.
The night expands its chest,
Extinguishing twilight's fire.
The storm clouds beckon,
As the sun quietly disappears,
An awesome deluge to threaten,
Releasing its pent-up tears.
A praying mantis on its knees,
Its native heart filled with praise,
On its face blows gentle breeze,
Its head to the heavens did raise.
Nature’s face full of mystery,
How is it that we do not care.
Whispering secrets of intimacy,
Listened to as an act of prayer.

Among the fine phrases you have penned, I especially like these two:
"The day done sweet drifter,
Take your rest with ease."
Unfortunately, for suburban dwellers like me, humans wage war on nature to the point of nature having to adapt to light all night long and continue traffic noise interrupting their communication like bird twitter and cricket song. But somehow, they prevail. While we humans lose track of them and their lovely insights.
