Our Emotions Never Truly Lie
by John Herlihy
Our emotions never truly lie,
Whether they smile or sigh.
Drawn out from the heart,
They oh so reluctantly depart.
They make their feelings felt,
Before the mind they knelt.
To ask one simple question,
To seek their true direction.
Emotions born of raw impulse,
Find way in the heart pulse.
Stark feelings can serve treason,
True feelings find wisdom in reason.
The emotions a new knowledge sew,
Knowledge not otherwise to know.
Emotions highlight what matters most,
Our joys and sorrows serve as host.
Our emotions lead us toward action,
Their intensity offers us their traction.
Anger can often a sense of justice spark,
Love often involves sacrifice, hark.
Reason alone is considered blind,
When the heart pulse left behind.
Emotions turn a spark into a flame,
To enrich thoughts as engraved name.
What do emotions want to know,
When the flood gates overflow.
What purpose might they fulfill,
What command by force of will.
Signals of truth to be deeply felt,
Honest reaction to the cards dealt.
Reality drawn from an inner core,
Bringing our emotions to the fore.

I am very slow to emote. And, I rarely feel anger. Perhaps, if I was a witness to someone doing something really terrible, I would feel anger. For like you wrote, our emotions do not lie. We can't hold them back when they come forward.

Now, if we could just hog-tie the mind from messing with our honest emotions, we'd probably find more joy with what you've outlined as the many emotional moods we encounter every day. For me, this poem speaks loudly to our congressmen and women. I believe there are a lot more honest emotions being pressed down by their minds and the entrapment many feel by the Whitehouse.
