The Vision of Sea and Sky
by John Herlihy
I stand on a wall, abutment, promenade.
Transfixed, lost in the dream of the world.
Dressed in a white linen suit, suede shoes.
Before me lies a vast expanse of the sea.
Over this sea lies this vast expanse of sky.
Icy blue of the sky, cobalt blue of the sea.
Shades of color mix and merge into one.
The cobalt blue vivid, energetic, dynamic.
The powder blue soft, calming and subtle.
Separating these infinities lies the horizon.
A thin line, the hem of the earth, invisible.
The seam of both heaven and earth visible.
This distant horizon within as near horizon.
Macrocosm above in the microcosm below.
I stare hypnotized by this celestial wonder.
Absolute silence echoing as voice of thunder.
I lower my eyelids, take leave and walk away.
The visionary memory lies within me to stay.

I might have seen it in a painting. Start white against the blue matches the clouds. But if you had written that those were "Blue suede shoes," you would have really thrown me off, Elvis.
