The Question of Conscience

by John Herlihy

In the background of our mind

Lies the question of conscience.

Guidance for those running blind,

Along with its compelling insistence.

A question whose answer freely gives,

In the mystery of a far distant star.

Always hovering overhead in our lives,

Advice coming from a remote place afar.

Conscience will always make itself known,

Speaking in a voice as if it were the host.

We have entered an enlightened zone,

Following the footsteps of a spiritual ghost.

Indeed, when making a momentous decision,

Where values concerned, we follow precision.

We turn to conscience whenever doubts arise,

On a vital decision that could affect our lives.

Alternative voices plague us within the mind,

Voices that nag, tell me that I am not enough.

Whispering fears and doubts that are unkind,

Tell me that I am not made of the right stuff.

The voice of conscience sets the record straight,

Evil thoughts dissipate in the light of a clear breast.

Leading toward righteousness thru its open gate,

To live life in good conscience as a life blessed.

This is a topic of loaded substance, John. My conscious is heavier than I am; and that’ a weight to carry for this small person. Stanza #4 is my favorite, the line: “On a vital decision that could affect our lives.” Your topics are consistently touching our lives with relevance in our hourly grapple and glory with the ‘human condition.’ Carry the flame, John* ~~ djl

I AM TOTALLY LIFTED BY YOUR LAST STANZA! THERE IS SO MUCH IN YOUR LAST WORDS THAT BRINGS THE WHOLE WORK SO SOLIDLY TOGETHER. WHO MAKES OUR CROOKED PATHS STRAIGHT, BUT 'HIM'? DOES 'HE' NOT CARRY US UPON HIS BREAST...TAKING US THROUGH THE 'GATE'...THAT IS HIM? INDEED, 'HE', THE GOOD SHEPHERD, LEADS US IN PATHS OF...RIGHTEOUSNESS, THAT IS...A BLESSED LIFE. THUS...A QUESTION OF CONSCIENCE...IS ALL TIED UP IN...'HIM'. AMEN. WHAT A FINE 'PROVOKER' THIS SHARING IS, THANK YOU, DEAR JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You seem to conclude that the true conscience resides outside of each of us…some constant…for example…the 10 Commandments cast in stone, making them permanent?

My conscience tells me when something that has been considered iron-clad and unchangeable is not based on any facts, I seek out facts that guide my conscious in my understanding of whatever that is. It may be opposite the prevailing belief. I'm comfortable with that but concerned about others who have not found out what I have.

I've learned never to betray my conscience, even if the laws of the land demand it, and we're (very soon now) coming into a frightening time when that will be a grievous test for many. Betrayal and hatred is easy for people with no conscience. And with out-of-control pride, people easily deceive themselves. Thankfully, even those with a modicum of conscience remaining, still have a still small voice deep inside telling them something is wrong. Enjoyed your thoughts. Peace. rlc
