On this labor day, in praise

Of all those workers of the world
Whose hard labor makes the world turn

In Praise of Anonymity
by John Herlihy

I ask myself: Do I want to be known?
I ask because I am knowingly unknown.
An unseen poet with an unspoken voice,
Is this anonymity any cause to rejoice?

I bask in this privacy, truth to tell,
Mystery inherent in an unrung bell.
Words scripted on an empty page,
Sentiments that echo wisdom sage.

I tell myself: I don’t want to be known,
A sense of freedom in being unknown.
Time enough to probe what I might say,
Time enough to find my own solitary way.

Do bluebells know of their utter beauty
Or rest content in their own anonymity?
Owls offer us an image they never devise,
The image, not the owl, seems to be wise.

Anonymity ensures an exploration of self,
Who am I sitting there quietly upon a shelf?
Fame brings with it much inevitable noise,
Drowning out the buds of our private joys.

Give me anonymity as light gives a shadow;
Not me, the poems, blooming in the meadow.

I AM SO GLAD THAT WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE ONE CAN 'CHOOSE' THEIR LEVEL OF EXPOSURE...THIS IS A GOOD THING. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Your poem brought to mind the unknown worker type that is the symbol of Labor Day. Actually, wage slaves that required a few notable individuals who were willing to risk their anonymity in order for the holiday and other benefits like the five day work week to happen.

But I respect your desire to be unknown. Your poetry certainly involves much introspection. But as an author, you stand the risk of being discovered and therefore, perhaps lose your shield of anonymity.

Perhaps the greatest freedom is to be completely unknown, for in those shadows the soul can breathe without the crushing weight of societal expectation and judgement. Anonymity though (IMO) is not about hiding from society, but I think more about claiming autonomy, protecting privacy, and acting authentically without the pressure of being seen, or listening to the bullshit opinions of others. Finding peace with oneself is not just passive acceptance, it's an active alignment with who you are, and what you do, which invariably leads one to a life of purpose and harmony. An interesting reflection, John, that got me thinking about dignity, justice, and the unseen hands that build, sustain, and enrich our world. You are one of them. Thank you for sharing. Peace. r

Next Arrivals by Robin Ouzman Hislop

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
