The Vision of Sunset
by John Herlihy
Voila, we have the vision of sunset,
Hours of the day homeward bound.
The sun rays shooting heavenward,
Well-defined shafts bristling with light.
Not just light, yellow, no golden light,
Rising forth from the earth’s horizon.
The mountain and its peak in silhouette,
Against the regal crown, no the halo.
Of the mountain in all its august glory,
Stunning, such breadth, such height.
Spears of light escaping the darkness,
As creeping shadows enshroud the land.
Upon the scene, its name twilight,
A steady imperceptible diminishing.
The gold no longer gold, burnished,
Light spears no longer sharp, bright.
Day has finally drained far, far away,
Night of ebony darkness holds sway.
A splinter of crimson light remains,
Led into the grip of night, in chains.

A tranquil time for reflection and turning down the volume of the day.
