Several Folks Told Me They Had Never Heard Much about Them

So I Very Sadly Offer CJ’s (Calamity Jane’s) Very Tragic Story Below

 To Illustrate the Horrors That Occur in Puppy Mills Each and Every Day

When humane society officers rescued her

Calamity Jane was nearly twelve years old

She’d spent most of her life in a ‘puppy mill’

As a ‘breeder bitch’ producing litters to be sold

Her never ending days of misery and neglect were far too long

She spent most of them alone in filthy cages far too small for her

She hadn’t learned very much about love or human companionship

She produced ‘pure bred pups’ yet she was always treated like a cur

Calamity Jane had mange, ringworm, and abscessed teeth

She had a very blank expression on her emaciated bald frame

She had cataracts, a severe ear infection, and crippling arthritis

A typical story of a dog abused by a puppy mill for monetary gain

Calamity Jane was one of 200 dogs recently rescued from a puppy mill

A large ‘dog factory’ if you will that breeds as many puppies as they can

Their ‘breeder bitches’ kept in atrocious conditions for their entire lives

Forced to produce as many pups as possible to be sold across this land

Many of these severely abused puppy mill ‘breeder bitch’ females

Were in such pathetic shape that they were euthanized right away

But some of them were able to be brought back to health with TLC

And some of them were adopted by compassionate souls within days

Others like Calamity Jane were so severely maladjusted from neglect

It would take many long months before they ever trusted any humans again

Although she didn’t live long after her rescue CJ finally found a little happiness

And I truly believe that all of us must act now to finally put this barbarism to an end

To me, CJ's tragic story symbolizes many things: the resilience of the canine spirit to somehow overcome years of gross neglect in a filthy, desolate cage; the desperate hope that I believe resides deep within every abused animal that I’ve ever come across to one day at least experience a little love and kindness from we human beings; and the tremendous difference that even an ounce of humane, responsible, and compassionate care can truly make in any creature’s life.

For most puppy mill dogs in America today, however, there will be no happy endings. Most communities in the U.S. don’t have the desire or the staff to investigate all of these puppy mills, or even the required space to accommodate the vast numbers of woefully abused animals typically involved when a large inhumane dog breeder is finally shut down.

However, there are some options available to help dogs like CJ. The best way to end the tragic suffering of these animals is to cut off the flow of dollars to those who sell dogs born in puppy mills—namely dogs sold in many of our retail pet stores, on numerous Internet websites, and through newspaper and magazine advertisements.

Please Adopt Your Next Dog, Don’t Buy It – While thousands upon thousands of puppies are mass produced in these grotesquely inhumane puppy mills every year in the United States, between six to eight million dogs and cats languish at animal shelters and pounds all across this land.  And very sadly, three to four million of these shelter animals have to be euthanized each and every year because no one wants them.  The very ‘lucky’ breeder bitches that can no longer produce pups end up at these shelters, too; but the vast majority of them are simply butchered by these puppy mill operators when they finally outlive their usefulness.

If you insist on purchasing your next dog instead of adopting it, please do some investigating before signing any purchase agreement.  Check with the Better Business Bureau, the nearest humane society, and/or law enforcement agencies to determine the reputation of the breeder, and to determine if any complaints have been lodged about his or her business operation.  If a pet store won’t tell you who their breeder is, don’t buy a pet from them.

Very sadly, many an exuberant new owner of ‘the perfect pure bred pup,’ with outstanding ‘pure bred papers,’ quickly learns that their new dog has inherited many of its mother’s severe ‘puppy mill medical maladies;’ and when they finally review the fine print on their bill of sale, they realize it’s too late:  they’ve accepted their new puppy ‘as is,’ and they’ve already released both the seller and the breeder of any and all liability concerning any future veterinary medical care their new dog will need.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words; I think these ‘before and after’ pictures of CJ are worth many many more.  They also make an animal lover like myself want to weep for the blatant inhumanity mankind continues to display towards far too many of our nonhuman earthly neighbors.
