-Thoughts From The Road-

I was once again now heading south

Now three years after Katrina’s wrath

Traveling back down, to New Orleans

Down an extremely sad but familiar path

Many of us were going back to remember

Those very tragic days, when so many died

To honor the memory, of both people and pets

To meet old friends, to recite poems, and to cry

But Mother Nature seemed to have her own plans

I arrived at City Hall, to extremely horrifying news

New Orleans would now have to prepare once more

A huge storm named Gustav, again bringing the blues

We had our nostalgic gathering, to remember

And then, we had our luncheon, with old friends

Then suddenly, an evacuation notice from the mayor

Our carefully planned event, now quickly had to end

As storefronts were now being hastily boarded up

And as others raced away to buses, trains, and planes

I soon found myself once more heading north in my car

With two million other souls, a day before Gustav came

And as I looked all about the bumper to bumper highway

I once again saw weary families, leaving their homes behind

Our three year anniversary memory of a storm named Katrina

Had been cut short, by one called Gustav, who was so unkind

And when I finally reached the relative safety of Jackson, MS

I hoped and I prayed, that Gustav would not be so savagely mean

But I also knew that if assistance would once again soon be needed

Many of us would again find ourselves on the streets of New Orleans

Don’t Know When I Will Write Again;

Maybe When Gustav Comes To An End.

And Please Hope and Pray,

That The Levees Hold This Time.

Great story from the road... It will be a tough September. Though Gustav showed mercy to NOLA, it's a dangerous season. IKE will be the ferocious Cape Verde Hurricane to watch. Heads up South Florida!
I hope to be out of this state by 2010...

the levees held so that the overflow could just slop on over. Not as much damage but still more than ths region could handle. Your poem brings a very personal touch to the horror of Gustav. excellent write. Liz

should our prayers be directed towards Congress, to get off their duffs and approve the funds for the needed Gates in the canals down there?

this morning, the mayor of NO said the Army Corps of Engineers can't do this until 2011 - 3 years from now!

WHY? what other projects have higher priority? the 28 mile Mexican fence?

peace - tom

Katrina, a horrific experience; but we appear to have learned an exemplary lesson from her. Of the approx 12 large emergency shelters set up in the D/FW area, two have not needed to be used as of 5 p.m....and most all have kennels set up for pets. That's planning! Think they took care of the one levee-leak, 'bout 20 mi. south of N.O. So much of that coastal area is at - or below - sea level, yet it's "Home" for so many who have sufferred so much.
Blessings and Prayers for them...and you - Micke

i'm so glad the ones evacuating from nola were able to take pets, can only ponder what is going to happen to those on the east side of the storm where they did not expect problems and are now evacuating

Not a pleasant site those cars bumper to bumper. It had to be though as you have to play it safe. The Gustav is downgraded but heavy rains still I believe. Good to be safe and not sorry it seems to me.

I have been watching the TV regards New Orleans & so far as I know, they have been saying the levees, save one spot, were holding...Fortunately Gustav dropped to a Cat 2 hurricane before achieving landfall, though that is not much of a drop, but better than being a 3 to 5...and they let pets leave this time and provided for them...somebody learned something from Katrina...at a terrible cost...stay well on the road, bro', and know you are missed...Ed & Rufuz

Stay safe, Ed, we here in North Central Texas may get a piece of Gustav come Tuesday and Wednesday, depending on the track. And yes, I've been praying all morning the levees hold and all I know are safe.

(((((HUGS))))) and love, Karla.

Yes, prayers are out there for all of you, let's hope that Gustav becomes less strong as it hits land, Oh my, it's so much like Deja Vu again. I met a dog today (she was in a truck at Sears) and spoke to her, she was a black beautiful lab. As I was leaving the parking lot, I saw a man and immediately knew it was his dog. I asked him and he said yes, she's a rescue dog from New Orleans. He got her when she was two, her name is Sable. He loves her so, and I thought, oh my how did I ever know he was her owner, and I remembered something, My daughter has a rescue lab Orlando, and I truly believe some of Orlando's spirit is with me all the time. Just pretty kismet thats for sure.
Please stay safe and let me know when you are back at home.
Peace, love, and angel light, My dear friend, Ed,
Amber "V"
