“One need not be a chamber to be haunted,

One need not be a house;

The brain has corridors surpassing

Material place.”

Emily Dickinson

August 28, 2005

Eight years have now passed

And I still remember their pain

So many of their lives, and mine

Will never again, ever be the same

I had planned to travel to the Gulf Coast once

But many of us realized we couldn’t stay away

I ended up journeying down there four times

And most of my memories, are still vivid today

It has now been estimated, that nearly half a million

Companion animals were left behind, in this hurricane

We eventually managed to rescue about 15,000 of them

The rest were lost, in the howling wind and merciless rain

Those surviving, forced to somehow fend for themselves

And, it was the haunted look, in far too many of their eyes

That will live on in my mind, for the rest of my natural days

That still make so many of us who went there, still want to cry

But I also have some extremely fond, everlasting, remembrances

Of extremely dedicated rescue volunteers, from all over our planet

Who helped each other cope with the horrific images we all beheld

Renewing our vows, to never take our animal neighbors, for granted

And eight years later, I still have three Katrina survivors in my home

Who remind me every day, just how precious companion animals are

And very often, I have to wake the three of them, from their nightmares

For all four of us, no matter how much time passes, this storm is never far

It was because of this devastating hurricane that I began rescuing animals

I never thought that eight years later, I would still be out there, helping them

Because of our abysmal economy, pets are now being left behind, everywhere

And today, I sadly often wonder, if our national pet abandonment, will ever end

Dear Ed,

You are too kind to think that the economy is a valid excuse.
There is no good reason to abandon your friend, I call that abuse.
I could not put my head on my pillow knowing that I abandoned my friend.
This is just a sign of hardened hearts that turned to stone in the end.

May every pet find a good home and may every one in our society wake up and die right!

Amen

Sadly, I don't accept that the abandonment syndrome is predicated on the economy...at least not the economy of monetary definition. The economy of emotional bankruptcy has been upon us for generations. We just continue to lie prostrate and let more of its need to contaminate in order to create control over us by others infiltrate and dominate. No wonder there's so little compassion left in society. We've been led to believe it is, was, and will continue to be about power, money and carnal needs. Compassion for creatures with no other agenda than to love and be loved is snickered at. Go figure.

If I never did before, you are to be commended for your effort to save as many as you could. It is tragic to think how many lost their lives by being abandoned.

Your last line has a sad connotation to it, because it seems that the more we have the less we value it. I think pet abandonment will continue as long as we live in a throwaway society. Because pets are so dependent upon us and so loving, regardless of how we treat them, they become objects, like toys, to many, and simply something to be used and then thrown away.

I believe in karma. All those pet abusers out there will get their comeuppance. Some have probably been foreclosed on and thrown in the street already.

I hope that legal abandonment like happened in Katrina is now over. We are allowed to bring our pets to the nearest shelter here in Houston. There is an agreement to set up a pet shelters nearby each emergency shelter. Service animals will be able to stay in shelters with their owners.

This comes across powerfully in ones mind, imaging a ghost town where the residents are depressed and confused animals.
