Nature not at its best

Poem Artwork

I see the signs of them on the deck furniture
A comfortable place to sleep.
I hear their sounds as they seek a mate
And leap from a roof too steep.

Their little paws are a reminder
Of a car with too much dust.
And scratches made when chases
Ensued from all that lust.

But now they've really got me mad
Presenting me with gifts
Of precious little birdies
Their little bodies stiff.

No, no, I tell them.
Please don't bring me this!
But they are arrogant in their love
And all I get is a hiss.

I guess they think if birds I like
Then birds are what I'll get.
And in their narcissistic way
Decide they'll be my pet.

A sure sign of cat affection. Must be the year of the cat, the fur seems to be flying around AD. Meow! M.True

Although this is not whimsical like T.S. Elliots cat poems, I nevertheless see an echo. Cats are fascinating on a number of levels. It's almost like they are born expecting to be pampered. The gifting instinct of cats covers the gamut of small animals and even insects. I'm not an animal person myself, but my mother is. She always keeps animals. Cats just happen to be the animal that I can tolerate. They don't find their way by sense of smell like dogs, so you have so many cats not coming home. They key on landmarks like humans tend to do. If they wander too far they just can't find their way home, unless by happy accident. Sounds like the ferrel cats are attracted to your home. Maybe they're lost? Among themselves they are savage as any cat found in savanna or jungle. Cats of the right temprament though are cozy and affectionate; perhaps that's just because we will feed them? Not needing us they are free to enjoy our affections..or not. Great read Lark. I think I'll post one of my only works about cats..and rats. Bob

Around here cats don't last. The mice and gophers do, though. All of them fall prey to bobcats, coyotes and raccoons, or hawks and owls. It is the hawks which take a dove or jay, now and then. And bright feathers they leave for my wife to collect. So you can rest assured that somewhere on the planet, your feral cats have met their fate and balance has been restored in nature. I remember that it was as you say in the city, though. Fine poem. Thanks, Lark.

Feral cats are yet another example of how humans are not acting responsibly with regard to nature and the planet. Thank you, Lark. Love and peace to you,

But they are beautiful! Neat, catchy lyric you've penned.

Cat lovers are not going to like you for this, but feral cats are a big problem in this country with so many cat lovers with too many cats and people dropping off kittens from unexpected litters. It's an epidemic.

On a good note, those cats will be here long after we're gone. ;-)

Your lovely poem, Lark, brings a forlorn smile
to my face...with tears and question...what makes
a domestic cat, used to "exchange of feelings"
...return to the wild?

As Churchill daid - dogs look up to us, cat's look down on us, but pigs treat us as equals.

LOL, the humour in this sure suggests the reality. ;)

We have many feral cats in the campground I live in...sometimes noisy, yes and sometimes a pain, but without them we'd have rats from the woods, so better cats than rats...though we do have a gigantic momma groundhog living nearby too...she is fun to watch...e
