Dance at Bougival

Dance at Bougival(1883), a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
The open-air cafes of suburban Bougival, on the Seine outside Paris, were popular recreation spots for city dwellers, including the Impressionist painters. Renoir, who was primarily a figure painter, uses intense colour and lush brushwork to heighten the sense of pleasure conveyed by the whirling couple who dominate the composition. The woman's face, framed by her red bonnet, is the focus of attention, both ours and her companion's.

Poem Artwork

Do I discern the faintest scent

Of lilies, fragrant, soft on skin

Bewitching and beguiling me

Beseeching me to draw her in

Her slender frame so trustingly

Supported by my willing palm

A gentle sway from tiny waist

Ensnares me and defies my calm

Breath-taking is her porcelain cheek

Enhanced aloft by fiery crown

A vision that so contradicts

Such purity in crisp white gown

Oh bless me and adhere my fate

Bestow this man with providence

To hold such beauty in ones hand

Cannot be mere coincidence

*

Comme il est beau! I’m swept away

By sturdy hands that firm my stance

A pose which echoes loves embrace

And lends an import to this dance

His grip is sound, his shoulder strong

His breath plays soft against my skin

As hand in hand he leads me on

I feel a flutter deep within

‘neath guiding touch of willing palm

The music bids me whirl and dip

But I can only quietly yearn

To kiss that wicked, whiskered lip

Should I return that hungry gaze

My stays may not endure such thirst

If I remain within his grasp

I fear the lace must surely burst.

Wow, enjoyed this immensely, Ruan! Your meter and rhyme felt effortless, drawing me into an intimate moment of life, joy, excitement and naughtiness as I smiled throughout with delight!

A wonderful rendition of the painting, encapsulating the passion of the dance, ending with the bursting bodice of delight.

An excellent ekphrastic write.
Enjoyed the internal monologue; the hesitant thoughts.

Beautifully written. I've had a copy of this painting for more than 40 years. Now I know why.

Excellent. Both the exquisite painting and the poem giving words to both dancers. I thoroughly enjoyed this, Ruan.
