Warned we were.....(drop acid, not bombs)

Saw a police car and thought of how all the pretty lights flashing could invoke a flashback...then this poem came flowing...

Poem Artwork

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night, who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz. "
Allen Ginsberg

Warned we were…

Acid will your brain deteriorate,

Pot will as well but at a slower rate,

Cocaine will leave you with no nasal membranes,

Heroin on the other hand will leave you with no brains…

Warned we were of flashbacks so vivid,

Eating chalk, paste and paint,

Climbing walls so weirdly quaint,

None did I do on one hundred and fifty or so trips,

Whatever did happen to my flashbacks?

I earned them, I deserve them, I gotta get a grip…

On acid, examination of the hand was the whole trip,

Others bodies I wanted to check out, had to unzip,

Felt did I when high as the moon, quite hip,

In reality though let me put forth a tip…

I may have seemed to be feeling really cool,

Sitting in class ignoring the teachers in school,

I learned very little, in high school, except how to drown in a pool,

Thankfully the swimming coach did save my ass,

Even afterwards I did give him so much sass,

I did sit there on a stool drooling like a fool,

Never did I have back then in the last, any real class…

Sounds like you've learned quite a bit - I bet your old swimming coach would be proud of you now.

this one's really cool ... enjoyed it immensely ...

the quote from Allen is one of the best passages in poetry ... when i saw ginsberg read it at st.mark's church many years ago, i was in poetic awe ...
