During the monsoon season, also comes a very auspicious month called Shravan. It is fifth month in Hindu calendar and falls around July .It is observed with great reverence in many cultures here. Shravan is also month of Love & romance. It is breeding season for most of the animals Fishing in breeding season ie in the month of Shravan is not generally done for the same reason

This is a poem for children ( from my workshop module)

Poem Artwork

                                                       Fish spawning

 To catch some fish

For a weekend dish

For  dinner  at the pool

Went fishing, it was  cool

 The  creek side quiet

Waves softly rippled

In   silence of night

The Wind did whistle

Cool  waters gushed

Splashed on shore

Moon’s  piercing gaze

Hovered far and near

Its silvery glow

At times dim or bright

On the sand

It was  all so white

 Beneath the   glaze

The fish did shoal

A school of fish

synchronized move

The bait touched one

But the fish was mum

No takers  close

On this full moon night

 What is on offer

Would fill my coffer

But it was lovely

 To see now how

 The night mother

 Guarded the sea

In her bosom

  Reckless sea lay

Rocking in its rhythm

 The driftwood moved

All her creatures

 Safe and sound

“Do not disturb,”

Said the wind,

“It is breeding time

They making love.”

Something that indigenous people always know. When not to take from the bounty, or the bounty may soon be gone.

Protecting the fish during the breeding season will lead to more fish in the future as our need for fish increases.

You've also given us a good reason not to drink the water!

Ahhh . . . You managed to stay the course in this nature-driven poem of being rebuffed by those fishes you hoped to catch.

"Moon’s piercing gaze
Hovered far and near"

Loved these two lines. You betcha! The moon can look "far and near" within one glance. It looks near within our hearts, but far away with our eyes.

The poem's simplicity is deceiving, hiding a profounder depth, thus it is a poem for children and adults. Well done. John
