How will we survive the horrors of this world. There is hope.

Shepherds

Life is what
Doesn’t go into
Your journal.

It’s drifting
In and out of
Existential aching.

Not knowing
Who’s been there
Before.

Some ancient
Tombstone
Where acid rain
Has made the name
Incomprehensible.

A future
Dimness,
A low-lit crypt,
Preserving peace.

Time goes on and on
Until the next crunch,
If there is one.
If dark matter
And energy prevail.

All this,
The universe,
This tiny planet,
Dreams of Mars,
Terraforming,
Expanding,
Population exploding.

Will humankind solve
Terrorism,
Religious rancor,
Starvation,
AIDS,
Hoarding,
Dictators,
Ignorance,
Fear,
Hate,
Killing?

Another donut eaten,
Another feast of forgetting.
The gentlest animal
Poached for spurious medicine,
For horns and ivory,
Mercury meat and fins.

Sadness of the bones,
Caressed carefully,
Weeping softly,
For there are no more.

Shepherds await
The day of peace,
When people respect
Every creature’s right
To Live,
To Love,
To Be Loved,
Into a cushioned fall,
Into eternity.

Parsimony is a virtue of both the songwriter and the poet.
You have mastered your craft well, and all the preceding comments
are testimony to your skills. But I ramble. Thanks for this rendering of life, love, disappointment, and hope written with care
and with deep understanding. Or as the songwriter might say "You've only just begun..."

Thanks to all for your heartfelt responses. I appreciate all of your views. Always gratifying to hear such passionate words and thoughts. You are all wise. The only kind of readers I want.

Your voice sounds much as I try to project into my own work - detached yet disturbed, contemplative yet passionate. For my own part, I embrace the dark and rejoice in its essence as much as I lament its outcomes. - Sorry - your poem caught me at a reflective moment and I think understand the forces shaping your words. Keep writing - you're good!

As your poem so poignantly describes, we have created a monster and it is us.

I'd like to say this is perfection, though this needs further attention.
It is dreadful how animals are used. Such as the dog that was caged, electrodes to the left, the dog move to the right. Electrodes to the right, dog moved to the left. Electrodes to the floor, dog lied down on cage floor and simply gave up, even when the cage door was open, it had given up wanting freedom, thinking this caged life was normal. What was the point, we know this! Yet, could there be times when saving children outweigh the use of animals. A moral maze, to be sure.

Ah yes we are all working for that to take place here and now not in heaven, where we know it exists.

You have aroused the attention of those curious about 'shepherds' and in this awakening reminded us that there is still much to do...to make all of life correct, for that I applaud you...but you have to remember change is slow and endless, but it is all doable. I wish you peace.
Cheers,
Dan

There will be those of a different consciousness, a focus that sees differently, but for the sake of planet's survival, as you so adroitly posit, killing needs to be reined in. That which supersedes any journal entry is the understanding that we are all one with components that function differently, but still...part of the whole. Some may never comprehend the slow kill of themselves by allowing the killing of other living entities. Of course, we might be thought a bit loony to include plants, but...those who have bathed the leaves of a rubber plant know what I'm talking about. Would that more people thought as you, we would have fewer senseless actions toward life.

I particularly was moved by the last stanza, Danae. Your poem was sad, and I know you meant for it to be sad. I am very much an animal lover, but there are times when the use of them is beneficial to mankind. You might ask what about animalkind? Good point. My point is I am probably alive and living a much better life because of the benefits they derived from "The gentlest animal / Poached for spurious medicine." I don't apologize for wanting to live as healthy as I possibly can. Don't take this wrong, as I said, I love animals, and I think they all have a place on this earth.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
