Long Shadows

Truth may be stranger than fiction, but more often than not, undeniable.


Poem Artwork

 

 

Past casts its long shadow 

into the present,

if allowed, 

into the future,

if neglected,

into eternity

 

And so is she undone

Unraveled

Shrinking

Shriveling

On a vine

Whose fruit came

From grafts unwanted

Forced to praise

Though never belonging

Not to them

Not to their house 

of poisonous thorns

 

She saw you there laughing

That they could never take

Your will away

No matter how hard they beat you

She envied you

But was already crushed

Personality warped

Too soon

Too soon

 

And her body jerks

at the memories so foul,

She cannot even face them,

As she tries to break free

But finds only more

Tangled ropes and chains

Tying her to this earth

That she wishes to flee

And condemn this corpse

Whipped to strips of meat

In mind

In flesh

In hope

 

Too fragile to fight back,

the child that she was

who seems but a story

told by someone else,

so far she traveled

to escape the memories

that still haunt her waking hours

and hunt her in dreams

 

You did this.

You are responsible.

She’s not your slave.

Not anymore.

One way to write it out. Get rid of the thoughts that haunt. The thoughts that hark back to a time when innocence was taken advantage of by harsh and cruel behavior manipulation and abuse.

Keep breaking free with every word and when you reach those golden years, live them in a golden way with no regrets and no more bad dreams.

I could spot your poem in a roomful of poems without names
attached. Few adjectives and adverbs, nouns that fit perfectly,
and always a fresh portrait of a story that I have never read before--or even thought about. Clean lines, sharp wit, great ending.

I hope it is true that some people can overcome the horror of abuse. I am 70 now and it still seems to control my life in one way or another. I could never express it in the most elegant way that you do, Danae. Sad, but moving in a haunting way.

Your poem lays bare the struggles of many abused children and adults. The inner-sanctum most can retreat to for comfort and solace is denied far too many who suffer the out of control physical and mental behavior of those who would desire dominion and dominance over the innocent. Bravo for speaking out for so many, some of which many of us will come in contact within our lifetime. To those who do, compassion and love are perhaps the only time-proven healing powers such victims need. Again, bravo for your ability to poetically wordsmith such a complex subject.
