She sees herself as any typical five year old - despite being eighty
The constant nagging and mummy calling of a five year old are not alien to her
Sometimes, you can hear her say, ‘ dada’
This she does like a wee bairn
Sometimes she weeps relentlessly
She lashes out fiercely when you try changing her clothes
Sometimes she sits on her chair looking so distant
Sometimes she mimicks a chiming bell
She wears unmatching shoes and socks
She doesn’t recognise her family and friends anymore
She doesn’t recognise herself either
People think that she is an arduous person
But Margaret is having a tough time
Beneath the grim cover of Alzheimer’s, is the same old lovely Margaret
Yearning ceaselessly to be understood.
