What Is Man

What Is Man

Monday, March 16, 2015

Poem Artwork

what is man, what is his goal
to kill, to heal, to mend or to war
what is his soul, where is it's place
in his mind, in his heart, or in the universe

what does he do, what does he care
for beyond him, nothing is spared
he is all and nothing is there, but his thougths
his reasons, to him no future cares

for now he lives, death is nowhere
his past, his future, all weave the web
who is he, to what does he attain
he doesn't even know
for the present is willing to reveal only pain

he searches and tries, to the end he cannot see
for the present is all he can entertain
he is empty and silent, sometimes even in rage
he shakes his fists, but what can he say

his life is given and taken by the same
for what does he join, nothing but himself
like snow and rain

it's all the same parts, all the same play
for whatever he dreams, that could be the reality
for which he is ashamed

by day he seems gentle, by night it's all changed
he cares for none, but his own flame
for if it is extinquished, only ashes remain

why is the hub of all that spins
the man who observes but can't enter in
of nothing he's sure, for even if he knew
he would be betrayed by what he thinks is true

for what is a man, what has he got
himself he says, but to all time and space
he's just a spot
a prop on a stage, then torn away

he does appear for a little while
then dries up soon and spreads in the air
he is there, then gone, what does it mean
what does it say

perhaps just a moment, or even a day
and later when all is finally done
he will return but nothing he learns

the circle is completed, the line is drawn
the cycle is over but he's just begun
he kisses life, but what is there more
a touch, a glow, a moment to know

reason and time just see to flow
if he stays or goes, it does't change the scheme
his senses are few, his efforts are great
but it is no matter, it's always too late

a friend, a lover, a foe or a dream
all part of creation, all part of the same
to God he calls after, but what does he plead
he hopes for an answer but then will he see

for what is a man, what does it mean
to an end, to a point, from a path decreed
what does it matter, for after him
another purpose will succeed

I don't know why I missed this one, because I have been reading every poem lately. You have described perennial "man," very well. We are certainly a disruptive and destructive lot that nature keeps cleaning up after. But we are reaching a major turning point with so many of us just going through the motions and not helping to solve problems by contributing to them by our deliberate, unthinking actions.

You really need to go over this one for extra spaces before commas and several typos.
