Little Folk, Baby Comes Along

(W'itten in toddler)

Mama's back home
wid dis new baby girl
an' all da folks are dotin
all ova dis bundle of joy

dey call her sweet little angel
but I don't see no wings
think she's just a lying there
dreaming up her schemes

she's dittin all da attention
no one knows I'm even here
I shout "I'm hungry, I think I'm dying"
but dey don't even care

even Papa talks to baby
in some silly kind a' talk
trying to make the baby laugh
but she just spits up a lot

an' dey all just 'a goin on
how she's da cutest thing
all I know come Christmas time
she'll dit more toys than me

I think she's purdy ugly
if yu ax me wut I think
she pooty poops her diper
mos' times she even stinks

her skin is mighty wrinkly
an' her head is mos'ly bare
guess God fordot to put on top
some purdy little hair

baby cries at night an' mos'ly
rite when I go to sleep
somebody mus be pullin
on her noz or ears I think

besides, I already got a brudder
who pulls my golden locks
an' luvs to break my dollies
till der arms an' legs fall off

now I make fun of brudder
an' at times he makes me laugh
he giggles doin dis silly walk
while wearin my girly socks

but I guess I'm really lucky
da baby is a girl
could'a had anudder brudder
an' two wud be too much

so I guess I'll luv my sista
cuz now der's two a' us
an' still one only brudder
an' we can wup his little butt

Love this humorous and very astute look at being a big brudder. The dialect adds so much to the poetry story. One feels sorry for Brudder as he is forced to give up the past attention to his new wrinkly sister.

Thanks for telling me about this, Daniel. I really enjoyed reading it and chuckling as I read, especially when "God fordot."
btw, in verse 5, a typo -- cuttest for cutest.

Hope I have time to read more before I have to go.

I love the vernacular of this child. It leaves the imagination to determine its origin - race or just plain "country poor". Certainly though you and I did not speak this way. Nice job Dan.

Sibling jealousy done very well. As I read, I kept thinking it was a boy speaking in Cajun talk. And then it turned out to be a girl. Do young girls down your way talk like that? Just curious.
