The Great Poem Challenge

I sat with my pen and paper in hand
after five cups of coffee and cereal bran
to craft such a poem so masterly grand
this poem would become the talk of the land

a poem so wondrous, mighty, profound
to literary giants my words would astound
and be hailed forever a master of rhyme
down through the ages of recorded time

but where do I start, how do I begin
as I scratched my head and wiggled my pen
then sudden, like lightning crashing the night
came the greatest idea that flashed in my mind

a proposal so simple but never been tried
a new way of searching for a poem to ascribe
this will be the method, today you will try
the first word you see, of this word you must write

what an idea, this has never been done
but it's all up to me, to see this gets done
fail I must not, I'll have to succeed
for the future of prose has been handed to me

I thought what a challenge, the goal is most hard
as I stared at the paper lying in the yard
I picked up the paper, kept my eyes in a blur
not ready quite yet, to decipher the word

now,
I laid the paper on the table bare
with eyes squenched shut, then a sideways stare
my palms were all sweaty, my nerves were on edge
my hands even trembled as the pages I turned

I leaned slowly forward, with my eyes straight ahead
not wanting to see what word to be read
for what if I faulter, what if I fail
to write anything of great meaning to tell

then I opened my eyes, with a quick fearful glance
to gleam that first word, this great word at last
as it came into focus, now I'd soon find relief
'cause the word said the one thing, I needed to see,
PEA

so I raced to the bathroom with excitement galore
to finish the poem but not write anymore
now it's been handled, with the task in my hand
thank goodness for coffee, you now understand

aaahhhhh!!!

I enjoyed the humor in this write. How often I do the same thing. Sit and try to write and my mind just wont cooperate. We have a group of poets that I host a room for on Sunday and it is a Picture Challenge group. I send invites out with a picture and they must write a poem about it and bring it to scroll in the room. I love this night as the imagination of the poets always amazes me. Each of us thinks so differently and I love it.

Very Kool writing Dan

Great fun. I enjoyed immensely. And oh, those rhymes. But seriously, it's true, I often see a word and then rush to the computer or pick up my notepad as the verses start flowing clear to the end. John

Pure brilliance. This is competition material. The flow of rhyme and meter match the subtle cleverness of your humour. Attention grabbing and very enjoyable to read and visualise.
