The mandate must be Mandarin-made...

Poem Artwork

IF ever I had a country : XXXIII - XXXIV

XXXIII

IF ever I had a country
And if ever by hook or by crook I were the Secretary of HEW and Culture
I'd make it compulsory for any being who wishes to run for office
To first undergo psychologcal tests to prove (s)he's sufficiently mature
Pass televised Public Examinations on Constitutional Law Logic Economics and Political Philosophy for the novice
In short, revive some sort of the old Confucian Mandarinate system of competitive torture
That is, if ever by hook or by crook I were the Secretary of HEW and Culture
And even if I never ever had no country to torture

XXXIV

IF ever I had a country
And if ever by hook or by crook I were the Imperial State Counsellor
I'd advise the King PM or President to put political aspirants under psychiatric surveillance
For it's most surprising that those who have more or less no vestige of culture would wish to be other peoples' manager
Furthermore, I'd insist that once elected they take the Oath of Anonymity and Silence
And watch how long they would then want to hold on to their power
That is, if ever by hook or by crook I were the Imperial State Counsellor
And even if I never ever had no country to empower

Hello, Ron ! Once again we concur; the case applies not only in your country, but almost everywhere else, I'm sure. Perhaps, wherever men risked their lives to free their brethren from oppression, "saviours" arise who contradict the emergence of the common run of politicians in normal times, but soon after the establishment of independence, political parties form around them and dynasties get created which behave the very same way everyday politics evolve. The exception can prove the rule, sometimes. I'm thinking, of course, of M.K. Gandhi-Jawaharlal Nehru tandem, and for a while the Zapatan revolution in its unselfish motives, etc. Thanks very much for your comments (re: XXXI & XXXII as well). Le "fut" at last is over, but not all the noise politicians are bound to make of it over here! Congrats to the lucky eleven, of course! Every good wish.

An interesting take on allowing politicians to do politics.

In this country all they have to do is become a lackey in their politicians' youth groups. After a lot of running around spouting slogans and gladhanding, brown nosing, will almost universally be accepted without any philosophical or psychological scrutiny.
After all most Americans think that it's crazy to go into politics.
