Orbs in cemetery photograph taken by Theresa F Koch
It’s muggy out here in the watery green brush
Stickers seem to find me easily it smells musty
The cricket chirps somewhere in the distance
I feel a bit creepy this swamp is theirs alone
The smells are becoming ever more pungent
I move forward quickly trying to be quiet
The old tombstones seem haunting, peeking
I feel the presence of time here ticking, ticking
Nothing will stop me I tell myself just dig
Here in this over grown mess I pull old weeds
A treasure lies in this sacred soil, keep looking
Then there in the brush lies my ancestor’s stone
Finally here in this under cared for graveyard
I find my treasure from my past long ago
My ancestor’s tree called to me and now
I add this treasure to my list, my genealogy
I have a really great genealogy. So does my husband Tom. I had to pull grass away from his stone at the cemetary this week too. Weeds grow so fast and cover up the truth. He is at peace in that old part of the cemetary where he wanted to be buried so I could visit him nearly every day. He knew what he wanted and he wanted me close still in death. He awaits me up in heaven too. I have great faith and love this write about genealogy too.
I like this poem. It takes me there!.. I also am interested in geneaology. I have many picuters of my amcestors graves. I love the ORBS in the cemetary!.....M
The picture you posted is very intense. I'm a big fan of paranormal topics. I have many odd pictures taken inside my home.
You've really set a spooky feel in this poem. Though you find your treasure in the end, the tone is suspenseful and eerie. I also like the spiritual feel to the line "My ancestor's tree called to me..." Excellent work on this piece! Love and Hugs,
Sheila
This is fabulous! Your play with words and discovering your family is wonderful. I am currently researching my family tree, and this put it all in perspective.
We spent our holidays a few years back in Newfoundland going from one graveyard to the next looking up old relatives. I didn't want to tell people. They asked if we visited many relatives and I said we pretty well found them all in one place. Thank you for sharing.
The search for one's roots or beginnings is one that people devote a lifetime to as the importance of knowing where we came from tells us who we are. Love the way you made this search for roots so eerily good.
