" Be careful what you wish for...

It might just come true "

...............................................................

I dreamed I was a very rich man

owning a mansion and big estate

but things seemed different

from what I once thought

as I did not feel happy at all

for people viewed me with deep suspicion

and there as an unbridgeable gulf

placed between us, for all to see

and I no longer had any real friends

as everybody wanted something from me

while I was so scared of losing it all

I saw through the eyes of the wealthy

and it filled me with horror and dread

the poor and the famished reminded me

of where I had once sprang from

and the values I once cherished

had disappeared like smoke

before my incredulous eyes

as I realised that little children

possessed the greatest gift of them all

Innocence

Yes, innocence is something that is never valued by ourselves until it is gone. Interesting write and showing what it must be like to wake up and realize the wealth lining your pockets. Though I have never been afforded the opportunity to view life through these eyes, I have been able to view it through the eyes of a simple carnival worker. Whether you be high or low on the totem of Man, others always seem to eye you suspiciously or with ridicule. Great write, got me to thinking! :o) Take care

... Innocence.... trust... dependence... selfless-giving... open-heartedness... Ah me, but don't the hard material burdens and responsibilities of life take from us all that child-likeness as we become protective and calculating. On-point write... in many ways, the more you have, the less you have... but, mind you, the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side of the fence for certain sure... unless you have the insight and fortitude to dismantle that stupid fence in the first instance. Those who are rich in generosity will always be a never-failing stream and will also find peace for their soul. Great write, thank you. K xx

ah, innocence? Peter, you raise questions with your reflections on wealth, poverty, and origins.

Hi Peter:

This is a very surreal write. The feelings of the rich and famous aren't always at peace. The rich are always more lonely at the top.

Peter,
The lesson is true happiness is not it our material posessions but from within our souls and connection to our creator their in lies true happiness. But it is nice to have dreams of grandeur projection and find the truth of relity.... :) Wonderful poem

I'm afraid I will have to be the voice for rich on this one. Not that I have ever been so blessed as to have any excess financial resources, but have had many friends who are so blessed. I hope that I have been a true friend to them and I know they have been to me. I enjoyed this poem and it speaks to a very real truth...a very real danger. There are many that this circumatance would be true of and many more for whom the danger may loom close. Thankfully some are able to hold onto their humanity, faith and even a touch of innocence. Bravo, Peter, your words always offer such food for thought.

Peter, How excellently you have presented, the contrast of the haves ...and those who believe they want to have!

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you, through His poverty, might become rich." 2Cor.8:9

Gratefully, all our riches are in Him.

Do riches have to take away the values once cherished?
Perhaps not, but they are a great danger.
You've expressed that well in this excellent poem.
God wants to be in first place in our hearts. Anything that takes that special place leads to unhappiness.
