Dying Towns

I miss the sight of the small towns and villages that once dotted North America and this is my song for them

Poem Artwork

The empty lot we played in is now a Superstore

The Legion Hall sure could use a coat of paint

The playgrounds swings and slide are getting rusty

And someone sprayed graffiti on  the old church Saint

Chorus:

Oh it’s sad to see our small town disappear

It’s sad to see no one seems to care

Norman Rockwell drew a picture of the past

Oh yes it’s sad to see the old town disappear

A pawnshop took the place of Pizza Joe’s

Though half the letters in his sign are still there

Ralph’s exotic dancers moved in right next door

In the space Mom & Pops Diner used to share

Where Old Charlie the beat cop swung his stick

Used to stroll patrol on sultry summer nights

Now only pushers and hookers rule the sidewalk

Under the blinking, grayish street lamp lights

And as I once more look out my window at the street

At these old houses like our town are slowly dying

Theres just a few old hometown kids left behind like me

Left behind alone to mourn… are softly crying….

Hey cuz this is such a heartfelt write. It is sad that so many changes accur in our lives especially the changes that are not for the better. If only we could stop the unpleasant ones. I too regret so many changes taking over what was once so beautiful.

Love to you and yours

Fee:

the human cry for individual and small community life. The eye sores we have placed where once there was peace and beauty. Sometimes it's just an exaggerated dream, but it was better, better, better.

love,
Kathy

I've seen many towns die and grow with new stuff just thrown in between the broken down places. Then the out rage over the sorry sites they tear the rest down. Like George said there are a few towns that have preserved their look and feel.

some places call it progress and some places welcome it yet for those few who remain behind are caught within old memories. Nice song to share your feelings. Dreams of yester year. Lady J

Laws were passed in our small town that kept this blight from happening.
If some one tries to set up shop that's prohibited and does it on the sly they are soon caught and put out of business.

Truly as individual in creativity as is those small towns that, I suspect, will make a rousing comeback very soon. Nostalgia has it's roots that big cities and their satilites will never compare with. For this reason they will return soon.

Love,

Susan

This is a sentimental journey you put me on and I enjoyed it. Sadly, all you write is true in oh so many towns across American, including the small town in which I live.

Wonderful lament in song, darlin. You'll have us all cryin into our beer, cos that's how I see this... being sung in a downtown bar somewhere where all the faithful still gather. You'll be a Bob Dylan yet, Pops... nice bit of agitprop that is beautifully tempered by it's loving sentiment. Kate xx

I miss that, too, Felix. I love small towns and cities alike. But it's sad when the one overpowers the other.

How I relate. Malta is a small island and we used to say more Maltese lived abroad than in Malta. Today the population has exploded. Foreigners are invading our island (to the delight of our Government since it means more money for their fun affairs). Gone are the fields, gone are the delightful house. Now its flats, dark and dreary.

Wouldn't be so bad if the changes were for the better but too often they seem otherwise. Thanks for the read.
