I burned the toast this morning and the smell for some reason triggered this write...those of you with children or who once raised children I am sure will relate...

Burnt Toast and Saturdays

By: Fee

Burnt black toast and Saturdays

Newspapers at the door

Mugs of coffee over crosswords

Who could ask for more

Kids downstairs watching cartoons

The robins sing their song

While Sylvester chases Tweet Bird

And Popeye was so strong

Lawn mowing starting off the day

Then clean out the cellar

Honey don’t forget to wash the car

Do the errands helter skelter

Campbell’s soup and grilled cheese

A Saturday favorite for sure

I’ll take little Patrick to his ball game

You take the others to the shore

Saturday supper down at MacDonalds

Greasy burgers and French fries

Home to baths and bedtime stories

Sweet little soft contented sighs

That burnt black toast and Saturdays

All too soon becomes the past

So savor every sight, touch and sound

As if it were your very last…

I guess a day like this does sound good to most. A break from the hectic week. For me, NO KIDS and a great book is the way to appreciate a Saturday...lol. You've created a special feel in this poem, Fee. It feels like a fond memory - all warm and fuzzy. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Truer words were never spoken. I miss the sounds that go with motherhood to young children. I especially miss the laughter echoing though the house and drifting through the duct work. You brought it all back to me for a few seconds and I thank you.

Excellent both for & of memories, though I never had kids, fortunately for them, and now that I know more about them, I guess I lost a little bit of life not having them...Keep bringing memories as great as this one & buy yourself a new toaster, send the bill to Georg & P-wee, both are quite well off...Ed

Hi Fee, This is a wonderful write!!!! It reminds me of how my ex always burned the toast. We didn't have a toaster, but we had a gas stove that he would light and hold the pieces of bread over the flame. He could never get it right!
