Christmas Alone

I miss the old fashioned kind of Christmas

The kind we had when we were young

When snow fell gentle while we walked to church

we’d try to catch snowflakes on our tongue

I miss hearing sweet Christmas choir carols

And those old fashioned colored lights

The tree lit up down on the town common

The toboggan parties on Friday nights

I miss friends and neighbors coming calling

The smell of wood burning in the air

Church bells ringing, what’s Santa bringing

Little toy trucks or a teddy bear

I miss tinsel and sticky ribbon candy

That tacky Woolworth’s wreath hung on the door

The Salvation Army man ringing his bell

His kettle filled with money for the poor

I miss the smell of turkey baking in the oven

Grandpa in his over-stuffed chair as he’d snore

I sure miss stolen kisses under the mistletoe

But of all of that, you know ,I miss you more…

Fee, I feel the same. Christmas is so different now and I miss the ole days! Thank you for sharing your memories in this lovely poem. Holidays are difficult because so many memories were with a loved one that is no longer a part of our life. The memories will comfort when we are alone...I know this feeling all to well as I lost my father two years ago at Christmas. He loved Christmas and took joy in preparing everything! Sending you love, and happiness this holiday season. HUGs, Chessly

Loved the stroll down memory lane with this one Fee! Christmases of yesteryear were such a joy! Of course they are still joyous...it's just that nothing is the same anymore....way too much focus on the commercial side of the season......this was lovely!

Hugs,
Anna

This is divine ~ I miss it too, mostly the caroling. That's it...I'm going to get people together and go caroling. Excellent. And it's time to make the cognac balls.
Thank you Fee!

Not much sadder than spending Christmas alone. Thanks for sharing this one Fee. I've been there and I know the feeling, but keep on keeping on. I was lucky and soon you will be too, she'll read some of your wonderful poetry and simply won't be able to resist you. Dick
