Many homeless are ex-military and have served this country well.

Poem Artwork

I have visited many homeless in the prisons around our town and some I got to know.

Many talk about getting back on their feet but they have no place to go.

The ex-prisoners, the job seekers, these homeless folks, they look just like you and me.

They may be homeless, but some are veterans and many have fought for the U.S. overseas.

I have also attended church with the homeless right here in my town.

They just want love and kindness; they love it when friendly folks come around.

They may be homeless, but they are not hopeless, and each one has a personal story to tell.

They may be homeless, but they still have faith and some love the Lord as well.

They may be homeless but most are not helpless in any sort of way.

So please take some time out, give them a hand, and pray for them today!

Amen

This is a lovely poem. It is true, many homeless people are not "helpless". In fact, some of the homeless today are people like you and me! They used to work, have families, and some even owned a home. Some of the homeless had a streak of bad luck, and some have lost their jobs. Unfortunately, some have mental illness, and may be estranged from their families. But, we need to take time to pray for them, and more importantly, try to volunteer at a homeless shelter. Even donating food or canned goods in addition to prayer may help.
This is a very touching poem!

Great stuff. Just today, I was saying to a colleague that almost every disadvantaged, impoverished soul we see on the streets (and there are many here in South Africa), began life as a beloved babe in arms, had good says and bad over years of struggle and never intended to end up miserable and destitute. Every one of them has loved and laughed and cried, and they remain precious human beings for whom we should care and to whom we should listen.
Yet how can we, when our money is bled from us by governments craving weapons, ever more weapons, and which spend billions subsidizing inefficient industries and failed banks? There is enough in the world for all right now, but not when 50% or more of all wealth generated is consumed by governments - we really are crazy and it's the poor who suffer. Reduce government to 10% of its current size and poverty will almost vanish. Just think - we could double the size of the productive workforce whilst decreasing the wasteful government take! Wow! We'd all be awash in wealth.

Bless you for your kind thoughts.

I too belong to a group that feed the homeless. They are dear sweet people down on their luck, many of them have in the past contributed heavily to society to the point it drained them of life. Wonderful write and touching. Love, Bonnie

It breaks my heart when I think of them John as I know most of them are homeless through no fault of their own and yes they are always in my prayers. Thank you for sharing.

I enjoy reading this poem.Homelessness is a huge problem in this country. It just goes to show that having a money,a house,a car can be gone in a second, but never your love, pride and dignity. Most importantly they have their lives.Being homeless is not the best thing to be in,but when you have love in your heart then you will never have a homeless attitude in terms of feeling down and out.I wish this country would take care of the veterans that have risked their live and limb for this country instead of focusing on a stupid bailout to excuse Wall Street's bad spending habits.Take care,I enjoy reading this poem
