I wrote this poem for the students I mentor for The College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University. I still recall my teaching internship from many years ago. This poem forms a bridge from the way things were and still are in the teaching profession. If you can survive your first three years, you will learn to love the next thirty! It's not easy but it's well worth it!

A NEW TEACHER’S JOURNEY We all have learned that teaching has its ups and downs Through it all the lives that we touched were worth turning around As a college intern, we are sometimes sandwiched in the middle of it all We were rough around the edges and we were learning to understand the call It’s been a time to stumble, fall, test ourselves and build upon things of the past We have endured much, sometimes times were tough but time has flown by so fast This journey is much about the students we encountered and what they learned in the end It’s also about the relationships we built to help teach collectively as colleagues and friends In order to win in this profession, it takes a team of people who strive toward academic success Collectively we can make a positive difference in our students and help them achieve the very best! © 2016, Dr. John Michael Domino

Teaching is certainly a profession that requires wearing several hats at the same time. Not all can do it effectively. In the end you're right. Teaching has to resolve in intellectual achievement or it's not worth doing.

In my opinion the role of teachers in our lives is insanely under appreicated. There is the old saying that the hand that rocks the cradle will rule the world. I would amend that to say that the hand that holds the chalk will rule the world as it is through our teachers that we learn to think and do every bit as much as through our families. Teachers have that much influence in what we become. Nice work!
