In the island of Mediterranean Sea call Mallorca, (Spain) Formentor, have a vertical cliff looking down to rocks below that the sea has carved into reaching up menacing fingers.
The Colonel was there...

Poem Artwork

They said that suicide is painless…

Mallorca’s Formentor six hundred feet high
pointing towards a very long agonizing drop,
the Colonel was so full of wrenching sadness
that from the very top he let his thought fall
to be torn to shreds by hard granite fingers
leaving it at the bottom like a wailing ghost.

Southern Belle wasn’t around, capricious life!
Didn’t want to them to stay together anymore?
Wrinkled with age that old weakened oak tree
with naked branches that challenged the sun not,
absent leaves, birds nest and few engrave names
standing there, no falling, hold back by the rocks.

Tempting abyss with a no promised tomorrow
but a sudden painless death? “Where’s my love?”
the Colonel ask himself as he looked down,
“where all those white cotton fields are gone?”
as the eyes looking down saw all his bitter tears
coming together to hammer pain on wet stones.

Illusions, like feathers filling your bed’s pillows,
where your head will rest for dreams to come,
as you lay down, the naked and solitary skin feel
the gossamer fingers that are around no more
and the delicate touch of wind on your lips
when you remember the last kiss you ever got.

Summer, ask summer where are all the butterflies
that flew with greeting wings for your welcome?
Solitude, couldn’t have it just a little tiny thing
to put by our side so we wouldn’t feel so alone?
Why the world rely in so many happy smiles?
Why it doesn’t have for the unhappy…some?

A drop of rain suddenly it the fingers of the hand
the Colonel had resting on the edge of the last stone,
not a cloud in the skies, shy evening stars only
perhaps someone was crying in that sky above;
with his lips he dried that sudden and sad greeting
telling him that someone, somewhere, was in love.

Six hundred foot drop, solitude had not a chance,
no wings needed to fly, or to walk needs no shoes,
just take that imaginary loving stretched hand
and go together where no one has been before,
where eyes will have forever no cause for tears
and the heart’s wound will bleed, not any more.

Very well written and yet horribly sad. Personally I can and will never understand giving up life which is so preciously given to us all a true blessing.

Take care,
~Gwendolyn

Seeing as my mother chose to leave this life early, this hits home pretty effectively. Love and best wishes to you, Georg.

A masterpiece filled with all the genuine qualities of a one lover who so wishes things were different than they are. Yet, in knowing there is no escape from reality begins to absorb it into the core of his soul.....

Be always safe,
Karen

No doubt... ~ After reading Your pieces for years ~ I can say that 2008 is the best of Your romantic-historic and political compositions, and that the romantic-historic collection is the top one.

I have enjoyed the reading of "The Colonel & the Abyss".

I salute You, Poet.

In respect and admiration,

...falling for and then falling from...graces the mind. Sadness of the sea and lost love touch sadness in this wonderfully written piece Georg. It is good that the colonel is still here to tell the tale.

Its not so much the jump or the flight through the air but the landing that would hurt like hell, if you survived the fall...no jumping for you, if I can't suck my exhaust pipe, then you cannot jump...ed

DAmn, I hope this isn't true Colonel - Georg - My sweet spirit friend! NO ending of confusion can be found in letting go...With all you would miss, not worth it...
YOU shared so much of your dying soul here "G" - I felt your heart crying...
This was vacation... Are you running...
If you were here, I'd give ya' a BIG warm hug and not let you go!!!
I don't know where to go after this..... Sigh....
An Intense Write! An Intense FEEL!
Imagination Over-Kill!
hmmm You might have inspired something...

This one sad, Georg - suicide not the answer - well penned, especially the last two stanzas -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

The Colonel's Belle would never want them to be apart and if he should fall from that rock she would find it and follow him just as her love was still following him. What a poem this is Georg, touching the soul with a taste of hopelessness and exhaustion dismissed by love and hope. I'm so glad he didn't jump.
