Revisiting Barabbas, the thief

We are near Easter, and every year we mention Jesus Nazarenus, Pontius Pilate, Mary, Magdalena, and Peter's "don't know Him" three times.
But what about the thief that the paid plebe shouted for, "give us Barabbas!"
What about Barabbas, what he thought?

Poem Artwork

"I am Barabbas,
a thief, always been a thief
and a drunk sometimes...
well, most of the time,
so I get a lot of harass
from damned Romans intruders
that again and again do it
they say to keep me good in line,"

"but I am a thief, I let you know
that I am a very good one,
horses, donkeys and goats,
from here or there it will be a lam,
or a shroud with golden threads
wrapping some rich departed...
dead people can't complain,"

"who that is patient will see success,
ha!, it wasn't go to be my lucky night,
the owner came home too early
and no wonder he found me inside,
with a club he bashed my head
and darkness came quickly, but not
before his belly got on my knife,"

"when I came around it was the Romans
dragging me after them with heavy chains,
to the prison of the Roman Consul
that loves to wash his hands;
one more and it will be crucifixion,
the Golgotha will be waiting, he said,
the one I meet before, called Kaifas,"

"the crowd was cheering like crazy,
as always they do to a condemned one,
besides me, as I never seen done before
was the most beaten up man,
his back flagellated to shreds
wearing a crown made of thorns, but
his blood saying that he wasn't a clown,"

"with my best bravado, facing the crowd,
I said to me man besides, the screaming
bastards want our blood and we should
kiss our asses for had been so bad,
then the Roman Consul surprised me
by asking the mob, who you want to go free!!!
Jesus the king or the thief Barabbas?"

Thiefs all around today, plenty for Kaifas to choose from, himself included for he stole Jesus life, and so did the Roman Consul, for his ill advised, and convienient judgement.
What judgement did Jesus make upon them, Forgive them Father for they knowest not, and they still don't! Blessings! Jasmin Horst

This is very realistic write Georg, given a modern day twist in monologue. Very effective for an Easter play.

good, Georg. I did a series of "first person" sermons years ago. One of them was Barabbas. It is interesting to get into the mind of a character.

Much Food for Thought here, brother. What if it had been reversed, and Jesus had been the one set free.
