And when you thought that it was safe to go to the attic again...
How can the past, with such short legs, caught up with us when we are running so fast ahead?
Silky ribbon hiding in attic’s darkness,
used to be red but showing fading brown,
tying yellow envelopes used to be white
with written addresses all forgotten now.
Trembling gnarled hands by accumulated age
that open some letters full of promises old,
little white lies flying in so many dreams
you believed then, but you don’t believe now.
Between the lines were so many dreams
and promises of a never ever dying love,
ink mixed with tenderness sincerity tears
all of it compared to reality is so silly now.
Inside them you will see yourself young,
years will meant nothing…they will not
interfere with any of tomorrows letters,
you didn’t cared for time as you care now.
Secrets, how many secrets you have kept
under all your sad smiles nobody knows,
lovers are the most cruel of all creatures,
you didn’t know then but the pain is now.
Where’s she? Where’s him? Maybe hiding
in the attic’s shadows, someone you forgot,
how painful was the last letter written by the
hand you loved but that you don’t love now.
Letters, where all the promises are gone?
the postman, he really didn’t twice ever call,
as life passed altogether without stopping?
suddenly, your yesterday has become now.
The familiar Dear Sweetheart got so blurred
when the eyes read the ultimate Dear John,
that the letter that day, like an autumn leaf,
felt from your hand then, as it is falling now.
AHHH...GEORG...YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE UNIQUE, EXQUISITE ARTISTRY OF THIS 'BITTERSWEET' WRITE...WITH THE PHRSES AND IMAGERY THAT SUPPORT YOUR THEME SO WELL. BLESSINGS. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Can't get any better than this poem, Georg...however sad. So many emotions filled within those letters...for so many people.
Don't know why, but the deception in your "Love Letters" reminds me of the movie with same name, and starring Joseph Cotten and Jennnifer Jones. Both your poem and the movie pulls at the heart-stings!

Old lettes can come alive when reread years later. When I wrote my first book about my father during WWII I learned about a man I had never met before. A man who was not the strict hard working disciplinarian that was my Dad but a young man in love, with fears and anxieties that went off to fight for his country.
So rich you are of memories of love, and so touching your poem, what made you open them again, I could feel your tears as you read each line, Uncle Sam owes you for the dear John letter big time, is that why you gots the purple heart, you know what I mean.
Hugs! Jasmin Horst
Dear Georg,
You brought tears to my eyes, but sadly this is the face of reality.
You loved her, she loved you (you assumed) and her last letter said she can’t be with you.
After so many years love and sweet memories fade away and the only fact remains the sadness in the midst of passing time…
Great work!!
Sad write Georg, the past always catches up with us all
Sometimes even haunts us, but life goes on and the sun will rise tomorrow
Well written poem as always
Have a great day

Georg this is so deeply touching, only the body ages, the spirit is forever young and pain seems to know no timeframe. It surfaces too often with memories. Stunning poem.

I have the first love letter that my husband wrote to me April 1980 and I cherish it and it will be part of me forever. Precious, very precious. Thank you Georg for sharing.
Sprinkling sadness where once there was showers of joy left in ink stains and to color with age the envelope and paper that once was filled with words that had truer meaning and now are seen as discolored as what time has done to the contents.
