The Christmas Tree
Each year I say that I'm too old
To trim a tree in winter's cold
But there it stands out on the lawn
I know I am it's subject pawn
Because this tree, a thing of beauty
Reproachfully tells me it's my duty
To string on lights when neighbors do
So when they string them, I string too
I shakily ascend the ladder
Knowing that it doesn't matter
If I fall, because you see
I owe allegiance to this tree
I've nurtured it since babyhood
It's now grown up as best it could
The colored lights now deck each bough
Turn on the switch and view it now
With confidence I realize
It easily wins any prize
So as I leave, I say aloud
"Oh, Christmas Tree, you've done me proud!"
